Periodontal maintenance

The key to long-term success of periodontitis treatment is attendance for maintenance appointments at regular intervals. You will often hear this called Supportive Periodontal Therapy (SPT).

This is usually every 1-3 months initially, depending on a risk assessment performed by your specialist periodontist.

Their risk assessment will consider several factors: how quickly the plaque and tartar accumulate, how much bleeding or inflammation is present, how stable the present condition is, how well you are able to maintain your teeth at home on a daily basis, your medical history and any health risk factors you may have.

To prevent re-infection and avoid repeated courses of advanced periodontal therapy it is vital that you follow the periodontal maintenance program set out by your specialist periodontist.
