Why Are My Gums Receding and How Can It Be Treated?

Written by Neesha Patel

Have you noticed that your teeth look a little longer than they used to? Perhaps you have started to experience sensitivity when drinking something cold, or you have become aware that your gum line looks uneven when you smile. These can all be signs of gum recession.

Gum recession is surprisingly common, but it is not simply an inevitable part of getting older. When the gum moves away from the tooth, more of the tooth root becomes exposed. This can affect the appearance of your smile, but more importantly, exposed roots can be more vulnerable to sensitivity, decay and further wear.

As a Specialist Periodontist here at Pure Periodontics, one of the most important things I want patients to understand is that every case of gum recession is different. Before deciding whether treatment is necessary, we need to understand why the recession has occurred and whether it is likely to progress.

What causes receding gums?

There is rarely one single reason for gum recession. In many cases, several factors can contribute.

Some people naturally have thinner gum tissue, which can make certain areas more vulnerable. The position of the teeth can also influence the amount of gum covering the tooth, while previous orthodontic treatment may sometimes play a role.

How you look after your teeth is important too. Brushing too firmly or using an overly aggressive technique can contribute to trauma around the gum margin. Habits such as clenching or grinding may also place additional stress on the tissues.

Importantly, gum disease can cause loss of the tissues and bone supporting the teeth and may be associated with recession. This is why it is important not to assume that recession is simply a cosmetic concern.

Should receding gums be treated?

Not necessarily. In some cases, recession can remain stable once the contributing factors have been identified and managed.

For example, we may recommend changes to your brushing technique, improvements in your oral hygiene routine or regular periodontal maintenance. These relatively simple steps can be extremely important in protecting the gum tissue and preventing a problem from becoming more significant.

However, some areas of recession are more vulnerable to progression. Exposed roots can become increasingly sensitive and may be more susceptible to decay. If the supporting tissues around a tooth are also compromised, there can be more serious consequences for long-term gum health.

This is why an early assessment with a periodontist can be valuable. It allows us to monitor the area and discuss whether treatment would genuinely benefit you.

How can gum recession be treated?

Treatment depends entirely on the cause, the condition of the gums and your individual goals.

Where recession is causing significant sensitivity, affecting the appearance of the smile or is considered likely to progress, we may discuss periodontal surgery to improve the amount and quality of gum tissue around the tooth.

Traditional gum grafting techniques can involve carefully repositioning gum tissue or using a small amount of tissue from another area, usually the palate. There are several approaches available, and the most appropriate option depends on the individual site and what we are trying to achieve.

There are also minimally invasive approaches, including the Pinhole Surgical Technique, which may be suitable for selected patients. Rather than taking tissue from the roof of the mouth, this approach works with the existing gum tissue. However, it is not appropriate for every type of recession, which is why a thorough specialist assessment is essential before deciding on treatment.
