How Laser Therapy Is Used to Treat Gum Disease

Written by Neesha Patel

As a specialist periodontist, I understand that many patients are looking for gum disease treatment that is both effective and comfortable. At Pure Periodontics in London, my focus has always been on providing advanced, minimally invasive treatments that prioritise patient comfort alongside excellent clinical results.

I’m hugely passionate about a modern, patient-centred approach to oral hygiene. That’s why for more than 10 years, we have been pioneering laser gum disease treatment in London using Waterlase technology.

What Is Laser Periodontal Treatment?

Laser periodontal treatment is a highly advanced, non surgical approach to treating gum disease. Although the word “laser” can sound intimidating, the reality is very different. The treatment is safe, gentle and incredibly precise, allowing us to target infected tissue while preserving healthy gum tissue.

At Pure Periodontics, we are proud to be the only specialist periodontics practice in central London offering Waterlase technology. This cutting edge system combines laser energy with a gentle spray of water to create an exceptionally effective and comfortable treatment experience.

Deep Pocket Therapy with Waterlase is designed to treat moderate to advanced periodontal disease by thoroughly disinfecting the gum pockets, removing inflamed tissue and eliminating hardened tartar deposits beneath the gumline. By changing the environment within the gum pocket, we can encourage healthy tissue regeneration and support the reattachment of the gums to the tooth root.

Unlike traditional gum surgery, this approach is minimally invasive and often requires little to no downtime, making it an excellent option for patients seeking a more comfortable alternative.

How Does Waterlase Work?

The process begins with a detailed periodontal assessment, where we measure the depth of the gum pockets and evaluate the extent of bone loss around the teeth.

Using the Waterlase laser, pulsed light energy is then directed into the infected gum pockets. The laser selectively removes diseased tissue and harmful bacteria while leaving healthy tissue unharmed. This level of precision is difficult to achieve with conventional techniques alone.

Specialised scaling methods are then used to remove tartar and bacterial deposits from the root surfaces. Thanks to the effects of the laser, this process is often smoother and more comfortable than traditional deep cleaning methods.

During the second phase of treatment, the laser helps encourage the gums to heal and reattach to the tooth surface, supporting recovery and long term stability.

Following treatment, we provide tailored aftercare advice, including oral hygiene guidance and dietary recommendations, to help ensure long term success.

The Benefits of Laser Gum Disease Treatment

One of the major advantages of Waterlase treatment is that it avoids the use of excessive heat. Many periodontal lasers rely on heat to cut tissue, but Waterlase combines laser energy with water, resulting in a gentler experience for patients.

This technology helps seal blood vessels quickly, significantly reducing post treatment sensitivity, swelling and discomfort. In many cases, patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure feels.

Laser periodontal treatment offers a number of important benefits, including:

  • Minimally invasive treatment with reduced trauma to the gums
  • Faster healing times compared to traditional surgery
  • Reduced bleeding and swelling
  • Improved patient comfort
  • Precise removal of infected tissue
  • Support for gum and bone regeneration
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Ideal for anxious patients seeking a gentler approach

Many individuals who previously delayed treatment due to fear are relieved to discover how straightforward and comfortable modern periodontal care can be.

Is Laser Treatment a Replacement for Dental Hygiene?

Laser treatment is not a replacement for routine hygiene care. Instead, it works as a complementary tool within a comprehensive periodontal treatment plan.

Maintaining healthy gums requires ongoing professional care alongside excellent home oral hygiene habits. Regular periodontal maintenance appointments remain essential for long term gum health and disease prevention.

At Pure Periodontics, we take a holistic and preventative approach, helping patients understand the connection between gum health and overall wellbeing.
